I got a letter through this morning from the organizers of a course I did last year - It was just a flier for this years race. The Trail des Cabornis. I did the Tout Petit Format (10km) there is a 20km and 40km version. I remember it being a steep course with some ridicules downhill that I could not get down without the use of ropes.
Anyway, I was surprised when I looked at my finish position, 9th V1.... Will have to do it again this year if I am fit enough (next week). OK, so there was only 165 people entered, but it still fits my aim of top 10 finish in category. Yipee I can retire now. Although there was a guy 10 years my senior who made it to 6th place overall and 17 minutes quicker.

Kicking the habit
I think I have re-kicked the habit of sugar in my tea. Throughout my 2 week convalescence I have managed to not to be a user.
Put in 3 short runs this week. Times are a bit slow, but it is still early days.

Straining at stool
The rest of the (US) trail running world seems to be analyzing how best to optimize performance. Positive splits verses negative v's consistency. I too have been busy trying to optimize. My problem is 2 weeks with Diverticulitis plus a hospital stay, leaving me weak, Joanne who has flue and the rest of the family needing attention.
Well, the question on my mind is how far do I need to run for the medicinal effects of running to take hold. From past experiences this is about 3 to 5 km. Today I had 20 minutes so I guess I was somewhere in that range. And as it is not very far, my overall poor shape could handle it. (The Garmin had lost charge so don't have any stats on my performance)
I came back and managed not to "Strain at stool" but did lose some weight! (by the way, that is still hovering underneath 80kg).
A long time ago, 20 years ago or more, I read that there was quite a large percentage of older people who die while "Straining at stool" and I found the phrase quite amusing - It stuck with me and now I live to regret finding fun in a phrase that clearly isn't..... But I can't help but smile while writing this.

1.5 cm
Doc has given the go ahead to run a few miles (caveat is don't over do it - not much chance of that) I will see what the weather brings tomorrow and may head out. But there are other issues cropping up now. Joanne got up nice and early this morning needing a drink, turns out she had a temperature of 39.6, so will not be going to violin and I will not be running today.
The abscess is down to only 1.5cm in length, I can hardly feel it even though the doctor prescribed about 9000 pain killers.
I wander if I could bring myself to get up early to run (I am up by 6:30am at the moment, so that would need to be 5:30am) or perhaps after wifey gets home (21:00) either way it would be dark and would mean no trails.... Naa,,, bin that idea, may think about it again in summer. Dark cold and wet I can live without.

Last self pitying note
I promise this is the last self pitying note (That does not even belong here) .... Well for 3 months anyways until I head back over to a hospital bed.
This is me in my hospital bed by Joanne (Note the smile and no kidney shaped vomit capturing device)

Where are the chips
A shade over 77kg.... If only that was from running (and that I could still run) I would be in great shape. As it is, mostly muscle loss that will be replaced by fat in a few days!
Out of hospital now.

Fun and frolics
Just after picnicking with the kids and Cecile in the hospital room - The kids seem fine! (No food for me, I am now into my 3rd day without food)

Hospitalized
I was hospitalized Friday. I innocently went to the doctors because my guts where getting out of hand and I needed some pain relief. He had previously said it was just a gastro, it turns out I have a new abscess 4cm long. (Photo to follow)
It took a bit of an argument for them to start giving the antibiotics (I was in the bed 4 hours with just water) But once I said that I didn't see much point me being here if it was just to give me water, they phoned the doctor again and the meds started flowing.
Of course it is not pain free. Unfortunately one of the pain killers made me vomit like a fountain (No food for 3 days) Still, hopefully, things are moving forward. They are really knife happy here though. They have assured me it is for the best. I was just hoping to keep hold of my body parts for as long as possible.
The kids came in at lunch with a Macdonald s Drive through. They where happy to see their old dad, not so happy when I started to vomit! It was good to see them though even if I was not the best of company.
Cecile is not best pleased though. She thinks I waited to long to go to the doctors (But what do you expect when the doctor says he will cut you up the next time you come in)

Old man
A bit of a hard week this one. Still sick from Owen's gastroenteritis. So much so in fact I got fined for it.
I nipped over to see a new house and on the way back I was "caught short" so I tried getting back a wee bit too fast..... Flash..... 124km/h in a 110km/h
And then there is the realization just how old I am. Owen, vomits sleeps gets up and is fine. Some hours later may take a dive and drop the world out of his backside, meds, sleep get back up and ready for life. Me vomit guts blow up, in pain for a week. Meds (no sleep as I have to keep getting up for Mr Vomity) no change still sore.
I did try and run to stimulate the abdomen and had a good time (8km) but its cold and wet and I am just not motivated to get in the medicinal run - And I am not sure it will do me too much good while I have been bad. Also had the my small bundle of vomit to look after and reinfect me. Lets see what happens tomorrow.
On top of all that, Alan and Gavin are in the Alps, I am not even going to get across to see them with all the germs that are flying round. I suspect they will be happy for me not to give them that present.
