Pace Calculator

I love pace calculators. Every now and again I swing by one on the internet and plug in some numbers. Mostly this is a displacement activity from work I should be doing. But in some ways it is quite useful when the wife asks, "So how long am I going to have to wait" in her grumpy way as she does not want to be waiting on a finish line for hours on end.

To be fair to the wife, she does not really ask (as she never comes to my races) but she does ask for the Beauj as she likes to go shopping in her favourite butchers and pick me up at the end.

So how long will it take me this year to run a Marathon? From my last "race" and I loosely term it a race (for me it was more of a painful walk) My marathon time this year will be in the 8 hour range! - I will be expecting a feast and a full fridge at the end! Anybody else coming?

Re: Holes

And another thing, running singlets.

I bought one the other day as it is getting hot. Well I am so fat that I get chafing on the underside of my arms where it touches skin as I move my arms back and forth. (Only really matters on a hot day when I am sweating  my nads off. Precisely the type of day I bought the running vest for!)

.... No shirt would not be better as the chafing is skin on skin... The only course of action is liposuction or a meat knife.

All you can eat, Baaaaaaaaaaaaa

Right, off to get a swift half.

Re: Holes

Yesterday afternoon I had about 5 minutes to get a shower after my run in order to pick up the kids. I got in the shower and the pain erupting through my nipples was excruciating. Let me explain it was a hot hot day.... So hot in fact I had contemplated taking water with me on my 10km jog. I know how to not get nipple pain over 10km and even have to reduce the impact if I have forgotten to put on some moisturiser. But the nipple event is not uncommon. What is uncommon is when I got out the shower I was still sweating and after about an hour and some walking later I noticed some discomfort between my ass crack.

Just a little bit later still I thought that some evil gremlin had been down there using sandpaper! Ouch....

Barrier cream over night pretty much sorted it out.

RE: I don't do drills....

a training method?
Sorry colin, hate to piss on your fire, but I'm not convinced a 7km cycle there and back could be classed as more than a warm up?..even on a fixie.
sorry #2 but you need to be doing more than one up and down in prep for marathon also....get on it!...

....I can say all this now I don't have a marathon spot...looks like I will be your support.
I have been out running ...did a fast 5km that really hurt (chest and calves)...then a nice easy(read slow) 10km last night
Was ill in bed with some 24hour thing for a day this week (not sure if food poisoning or other) so that is why taking it easy.
I am now considering KMV or 80km ..note considering....
But they have not sent reply from MdMB yet.
Karl

I don't do drills....

Drills are things I don't do. Basically I run because I like it, when it gets too hard I stop (Hence poor marathoning). I just plod around for a bit then go home.

But when I was riding home today I noticed something:

Ride 7km -> Run uphill 3 km -> Run down 3km -> Ride home 7km

Do that 3 times in a week and well, I suppose I have arrived at a training method.

I see a marked reduced performance on the cycle today. That must be doing me some good.

GPS Watch

A couple of years ago I had an idea to win a competition in Germany (for
work). I hooked in Lee and remarkably we won. On my run yesterday, I
thought OK It would be fun to re-enter the same but come up with another
idea. At that point I had a flash:

How about a watch that could do all the things that my Garmin 910 does
now, BUT add in a SIM chip so that the GPS could be uploaded in realtime
and then you could race against your mates in far off parts of the
world. Nothing that clever or smart the differential being that it would
use the new European SatNav system so it would be accurate.

At the same time you could get a rudimentary phone for emergencies.

I know your objection, your telephone already does that. But your
telephone is primarily a Phone while I wanted something that was
primarily a watch.

Bugger, somebody has already done it:

I am not going to buy it, but I think this is the next generation of
"Smart Watches". I like running naked (without technology) now and then,
this is absolutely going the other way. You would never ever get away
from work.

Graham, now that you are of the GPS grid, how is it going for you?

Shit happens when you run

A couple of weeks ago I decided I needed a nice chilled out flat run. So I did a short 7km near the house in the woods. At about 5.5km my calf suddenly tightened up and was a little painful. Like Graham I buried my head in the sand and pushed on:

As any good runner knows, you should listen to your body. As a bad runner, I have been completely ignoring the slight pain.

I have done a few runs since, some pretty hard (for me) but it never got any worse. Anyways, today I tested the calf and it had not gone away, but not worse. So I went out for a short hill run. After coming back, tested the calf and as of right now there is absolutely no problem (WTF) I expected at some point something worse then a few weeks off.

Sorry Graham/Karl, probably not what you wanted to hear.

(I still have a slight groin pain/strain from cycling a few weeks ago, I am ignoring that too... It seems to be going while I have not been on a bike since)
